Learning VS Studying

 Charles Jones

Most of us have goals that we want to accomplish when we decide to study English. So, we set our sights on achieving these objectives by signing up for an English class. This is a great idea! We attend the class and take lots of notes. At the beginning of the next lesson the teacher asks everyone “What did you learn in our previous lesson?”. In my 10 years of coaching English, this might be the most difficult question for most students. This is because we tend to study, rather than learn. Let’s take a look at the differences and how they can affect you.

Riding a Bike Example

StudyingLearning
•Reading a 'How to' book.
•Watching instructions on YouTube.
•Practicing until you can ride, then quitting.

•Practicing until you can ride.
•Concentrating on your mistakes and making improvements.
• Continually practicing and developing your skill.

English Class Example

StudyingLearning
•Going to class.
•Taking a lot of notes.
•Not practicing outside of class.
•Not reviewing previous lessons.
•Not trying to make your own sentences related to your life.
•Going to class.
•Taking a few notes.
•Practicing outside of class (reading, speaking, writing, listening).
•Applying what you learned to your life (Making sentences related to you work and hobbies).

Studying is a very beneficial and healthy activity. However, it must result in learning. Studying can be an expense, while learning is an investment. Studying takes a lot of time, whereas learning can be rewarding and fun. At VICTORIA ELD, our focus is on helping you learn and be able to use the new language and skill. Here are a few tips from the coach.

  • Try to practice your new language outside of the classroom. It’s important that you are able to make your own sentences with the new vocabulary and expressions. You can do this by writing them down and then recording your voice on your phone.
  • Make tests and take them periodically. Making the tests will help you learn, while taking them will help you practice your skill.
  • Join online blogs and chats related to your topic. This is an excellent way to communicate with others in English outside of class. Don’t worry about making mistakes.
  • Tell other people what you’ve learned. A good time to do this is at the beginning of the next lesson. You will usually have some time for small talk before the lesson. Be sure that you give full sentence examples.

Yesterday I learned collocations for money. For example: spend money on + something, earn money by + work, and save money for + something.

I spend too much money on video games.

When I was young, I earned money by cleaning houses.

I’m saving money for a new house.
